DFDS

Organisation Introduction

We keep Europe moving

Since 1866, DFDS has enabled trade and travel by offering freight and passenger transport services. We operate a unique and extensive network that combines ferry, road and rail transport with complementary logistics solutions, connecting European countries with each other, as well as with Türkiye and North Africa.

We primarily transport trailer freight units on our ferries. We also carry 5,25 million passengers every year. Our logistics services range from end-to-end transports of full-loads to complex solutions for large industrial customers.

Every day our network is brought to life by more than 16,000 colleagues. Our seafarers keep ferries sailing safely carrying both goods and passengers. Port terminal staff load and unload trailers as well as passengers and cars. Our warehouse staff store, pick & pack, and dispatch consignments. Our truck drivers pick up and deliver goods to their destinations, while back-office specialists support operations with digital services and business solutions. Together, we move to meet our customers’ needs across more than 20 markets in and around Europe. In this report, we follow a freight shipment from the Netherlands to the UK, diving into all touchpoints along its journey through our network.

DFDS is headquartered and listed in Copenhagen.

  • 16,100 full-time employees
  • DKK 30bn revenue
  • 20+ countries connected by our ferry routes, road/land transport and logistics solutions

Why BELOGIC?

DFDS have decided to participate in the BELOGIC project to accelerate the transition toward sustainable long-haul freight transport and to validate the next phase of our decarbonisation strategy. DFDS move products and people by land and sea. This, however, leaves a large carbon footprint and we recognise our responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment.
Since 2021, DFDS has actively driven electrification building a fleet of 151 electric trucks primarily deployed in regional haul operations. However, achieving our ambition of 75 % reduction in well-to-whell CO₂e intensity by 2030 for road operations, requires extending electrification into long-haul transports, which remains one of the most challenging segments to decarbonise.
BELOGIC provides a unique platform to demonstrate second-generation electric trucks with extended range capabilities and charging capacity, while also testing advanced software tools for route optimisation, charging strategies and efficiency planning.
By participating as demonstration partner, DFDS can validate a real-world long-haul use case, strengthening the business case for electric trucking and contribute to the development of scalable, intelligent logistics solutions.

“We want to drive the transition to more sustainable road transport. By demonstrating longhaul electric truck operation is possible, we open a new segment of electric transport offering to our customers. BELOGIC project underlines our commitment to pushing the development forward.”

Involvement in BELOGIC?

In Belogic, DFDS will be part of demonstrating electric trucks in long- haul operations, transporting refrigerated goods between Netherlands and Germany and testing new software tools.
