BELOGIC kick-off meeting

BELOGIC Project Officially Kicks Off in Brussels to Accelerate the Future of Battery-Electric Trucking

The BELOGIC project officially launched on 6 May 2026 with its kick-off meeting hosted by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Brussels. Project partners from across Europe came together to initiate this ambitious Horizon Europe initiative, which aims to accelerate the large-scale deployment of battery-electric trucks (BETs) in long-haul logistics.

BELOGIC brings together leading logistics operators, vehicle manufacturers, research organisations, and software providers to demonstrate that operating battery-electric trucks can become not only environmentally sustainable but also economically advantageous compared with conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Transforming Long-Haul Logistics

The project focuses on combining innovative logistics models with advanced digital tools to reduce operational costs, improve reliability, and accelerate the transition towards zero-emission freight transport.

BELOGIC starts with a comprehensive analysis of current transport missions, barriers, and enabling factors affecting the adoption of battery-electric trucks. Building on this foundation, the consortium will co-design new operational models together with leading logistics service providers. These models will then be validated through advanced simulations and large-scale real-world demonstrations across Europe, covering a wide range of transport corridors, vehicle types, and mission profiles.

Advanced Digital Solutions for Efficient Operations

A key element of the project is the development of a portfolio of interoperable digital tools that will be integrated into existing transport and fleet management systems. These solutions will support:

  • Efficient route and fleet planning;
  • Relay operations for long-haul transport;
  • Smart charging strategies;
  • Cross-border logistics services; and
  • Optimised operational decision-making.

The demonstrations will provide Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7–8 evidence, proving the feasibility and practical benefits of these solutions under real operating conditions. In parallel, high-resolution data collection and comprehensive impact assessments will generate valuable insights to support large-scale replication throughout Europe.

A Strong European Consortium

At the heart of BELOGIC are five leading European logistics operators, working closely with OEMs, research and technology organisations (RTOs), and software providers. This strong collaboration ensures that the project’s outcomes will translate into:

  • Actionable deployment strategies;
  • Evidence-based policy recommendations;
  • Commercially viable business models; and
  • Practical solutions for the widespread adoption of battery-electric trucks.

Driving the Transition to Zero-Emission Freight Transport

By supporting battery-electric truck operations with advanced digital technologies and innovative logistics concepts, BELOGIC aims to:

✔ Reduce operational costs
✔ Improve transport reliability
✔ Lower greenhouse gas emissions
✔ Accelerate the decarbonisation of European freight transport

The launch of BELOGIC marks an important step towards making battery-electric long-haul logistics a scalable and economically attractive reality across Europe.

Stay tuned for updates as the BELOGIC consortium embarks on its journey towards a cleaner, smarter, and more competitive freight transport sector.
